In a virtual world that is perpetuated by the constant typing of fingers, there is an ongoing debate over what content should be public and what content should be private. Further, who should ultimately get to decide? After our many collective tweaks to “Settings” and rampant social network-joining, one form of online communication has remained absent from the virtual world’s public versus private debate: email. Why? Why has email consistently remained private? You Must Be A Friend is a creative digital experiment that aims to look at possible answers, but at the same time, it also bypasses this question.
